Pastor David P. Mahn was called home to his Saviour on August 12, 2004.

Pastor Mahn served as Pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church since July 16, 2000.  He served as Interim Pastor in 1987 from 1988, and again from 1995 to 1996 while he was Associate Pastor of another congregation.  He came again to Messiah in November 1998, serving as Interim Pastor until he accepted the call to become the  congregation's permanent pastor.

Under his guidance, Messiah Lutheran Church continued to grow as a congregation.  Many new members joined and the congregation became involved in several projects to help spread the good news of Jesus Christ.  A project to replace carpeting has grown into an extensive program of renovation and rejuvenation of church facilities.  The congregation has also embarked upon a prayerful process designed to improve our effectiveness as witnesses for Christ.  One outcome of this process is our commitment d has determined to expand our community involvement and outreach through the Messiah Lutheran Day School.

In addition to his duties as pastor, Reverend Mahn sought to help people in crisis.  In his tenure at Messiah, Pastor Mahn organized counseling groups to assist the family members of deployed military personnel and families struggling with the pressures of dealing with teenagers with problems.

On September 11, 2001 Reverend Mahn responded to Logan Airport and ministered to airline personnel and family members of those lost that day.  He was invited to New York City and ministered to the police officers, firefighters and other workers involved in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.  While there he took a photograph of a cross in the wreckage, formed of steel beams.  This photo is now on the cover of Bibles distributed by the Peace Officer Ministries.

Reverend Mahn was also active in other forms of ministry.  He was a Chaplain of the Massachusetts State Police, and held the rank of Chaplain Captain.  He was a member of the Massachusetts Corps of Fire Chaplains, and ministered to Worcester firefighters and their families following the loss of six firefighters in a warehouse fire on December 3, 1999.  He was a founding member of the Massachusetts Corps of Police Chaplains and was the first Chief of Chaplains for that organization.  Reverend Mahn was a military chaplain, having served as a US Naval Chaplain.  He also served with the Mississippi National Guard.  He served as a chaplain with the Massachusetts National Guard and retired as a Brigadier General.  Reverend Mahn was activated during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  He was assigned to Fort Devens and worked with returning veterans.  Reverend Mahn was the Massachusetts Chair of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves, and assisted activated military personnel and their families during the Second Gulf War.

Reverend Mahn is survived by his wife Joyce, his daughter Kristin Ervin and her husband Jason Ervin, his daughter Laura Mahn and her husband Jason Stout, his son Jeffrey Mahn.  He is also survived by his two granddaughters Emerson Rose Stout and Ellison Wells Ervin.
